Lesley and Alan show their respect by completing Giant's Causeway Mighty Hike
We caught up with Lesley who manages Rathmena House after her enormous achievement to learn more about the challenge and fundraising efforts.
Hi Lesley, What is the Giant’s Causeway Mighty Hike?
“The Giant’s Causeway Mighty Hike is a 26.2 mile hike across the North Coast starting at Carrik-a-Rede Rope Bridge and finishing in Coleraine in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.”
Who did you do the hike with?
“I completed it with my husband Alan.”
Why did you decide to take on this challenge?
“I wanted to set myself a challenge to do something to help others. I also wanted to show my respect and admiration for individuals l know both personally and professionally who have been affected by this disease.”
How challenging was the hike?
“It was immensely challenging both physically and emotionally, especially from around 20 miles onwards as it was an extremely hot day (25oC in the afternoon). It took us from 7.30 am to 6.15 pm to complete.”
What did you enjoy most about the hike?
“The scenery was unreal. We hiked along the North Coast from Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge along the Causeway Coastal Path into Portballintrae then onto Portrush, Portstewart and finally finishing in Coleraine. You get to see things on foot that you miss when driving the journey.”
Were you glad you completed it?
“Yes, there was a lot of encouragement on the day from other hikers and drivers tooting their horns. I want to give a special mention to a little girl on the outskirts of Portstewart, around the 21-22 mile stage, who was handing out ice lollies. It was a lifesaver, and probably the best ice lolly I’ve ever had as I was exhausted with many blisters picked up along the way.”
Would you do it again?
“Initially, I said never again, but now I’ve changed my mind. I have a real sense of personal achievement for completing the 26.2-mile hike, and raising money for Macmillian Cancer Support makes it all worthwhile.”
Well done Lesley, we are all very proud of your personal achievement in aid of helping others. Lesley’s Just Giving page is still open to take online donations if anyone would like to donate, click on the link below:
